Careers in skincare attract people from all ages and walks of life. It’s never too early or too late to begin thinking about the career that you are passionate about. We learned some wonderful lessons from Amanda Barbour about what being an esthetician really means to her, and why you would want to work to become one.
About Amanda Barbour
Amanda is a lifelong Salt Lake City native. Before beginning her journey into esthetics, she worked in a debt collection job for 15 years. The money was good, but the work was extremely stressful and she hated being the “bad guy”. She knew she needed to do something else with her career.
As a gift from her boyfriend at the time, Amanda was treated to her first facial in a spa. The inviting music and peaceful atmosphere was completely revitalizing and made her feel incredible. She knew on that day that she wanted to work in a place that made her feel like that all the time. Within the next two weeks, she had quit her old job and was enrolled at Skinworks!
Why Did You Choose Skinworks?
Skinworks was one of three different schools that Amanda toured before enrolling in her esthetics program. She said that Skinworks stood out because of how friendly the financial aid person was, and because of how much the school felt like a real spa. The other schools she visited were very sterile and felt like a doctor’s office instead of a warm and inviting spa. Everyone she met at Skinworks was friendly with her and were open to helping her with any questions she had.
Life After Skinworks
Amanda knew from the very beginning that she wanted to be her own boss. She was sick and tired of people telling her what to do. Amanda envisioned owning a day spa, and that dream was realized a almost a year ago! She now opened and owns Mist Day Spa in Taylorsville and loves it! Her spa rents rooms to estheticians and massage therapists to perform services for their clients. It provides a professional and relaxing space for both the clients and estheticians and therapists to be. Amanda helps to provide the supplies and the space, and the professionals come there to work on their clients. February 2018 will mark a year after their opening day!
Advice from Amanda
Don’t hesitate, get started right away! Amanda’s biggest regret is that she didn’t start sooner! She is so much happier now doing what she loves and her big piece of advice to anyone considering esthetics is that you should start as soon as you can! Amanda says she loves esthetics because it’s about helping people to feel beautiful, not to just be beautiful. It’s about helping people feel like their best selves. If this is where your heart is and you love helping other people, then do it!
