Eyelash extensions are a great choice that can give you the appearance of a full face of makeup when you aren’t, in fact, wearing any. Because of this, you can enjoy summer without having to worry about running mascara or messy lashes, and for the most part keep your makeup routine fairly simple.
While lash extensions can make your day-to-day schedule low maintenance, they still need to be regularly taken care of. Properly doing so can make your lashes last longer and look better. Read on for our list of tips to care for your lash extensions this summer!
Keep Lashes Dry for 24 Hours
The first tip to remember comes immediately after getting your lashes done. After your appointment, it’s important to keep your lashes dry for 24 hours to allow the lash glue to set completely. This includes staying away from showering, extreme sweat, and steam. Doing so can help your lashes last even longer.
Once the 24 hours are up, feel free to continue in whatever fun summer water activities you have planned!
Be Gentle!
Don’t worry, when lashes fall out it’s normal! Your natural lashes have their own cycle and shed accordingly! But to avoid extra unwanted fallout, be sure to handle them with care. Some ways to be gentle on your lashes are:
- Sleep on your back or side, or with a silk sleep mask
- Use a satin pillowcase
- Avoid rubbing your eyes and tugging your lashes
- Use a cotton pad to carefully remove makeup with water-based products–never oil!
- Pat lashes dry after they get wet. DO NOT rub!
- Minimize the use of mascara, or try to only use it on lower lashes
Lash extensions can last 2-3 weeks between fills if taken care of properly. If you’re looking to make them last longer, be gentle!
Avoid Oily Products – Even Sunscreen
If you choose to use makeup on your eyes, be sure to use oil-free products. Avoid makeup wipes, oily makeup remover, and any waterproof makeup—sticky products like gel or gel pot eyeliners. The oil can break down the lash adhesive causing unwanted premature lash loss.
Sunscreen is important year-round, but especially in the summer. When applying sunscreen, choose an oil-free product and avoid any spray sunscreen directly to your face. Try to use sun protection that’s developed specifically for your face.
Stay Out of the Heat
No, we’re not talking about the sun! Lounging by the pool or hiking in the sun is totally fine! However, when using a blow dryer, avoid pointing it directly into your face and eyes. Likewise, avoid exposing your lashes to high-heat cooking like standing over a flaming grill at a summer barbecue. The intense heat can mess with your lashes and distort how they look.
Keep Them Clean
Your lashes, both real and extensions, can get dirty. Ordinary pollutants such as dust, chlorine, and saltwater are some things that can collect in your lashes. This is why it’s important to clean your lashes frequently, just like you cleanse your face. As we said before though, be gentle on them!
We recommend cotton pads to gently wipe down your lashes after cleansing your face. There are also lash cleansing products, made specifically for lash extensions.
Swim Care
Whether you take a dip at the beach or in a pool, rinsing your lashes with water immediately afterwards should be a priority! Pat, don’t rub your lashes with a towel to remove excess water and be sure to cleanse them after a day of swimming!
Wearing swim goggles is another way to protect your lashes! Chlorine and saltwater tend to lessen lash retention by reacting poorly to the lash glue. Try not to submerge your head as much as possible to protect them. And remember, it’s especially important to avoid any kind of water within the 24 hours after your lash appointment!
Get Your Fill!
While lash extensions can make your daily routine low maintenance and give the look of makeup with minimal effort, they do still require upkeep. Before jumping into the world of eyelash extensions, make sure you’re prepared for the commitment! To ensure your lashes stay looking their best, schedule lash fills every 2-3 weeks. Summer activities can affect the longevity of your lashes, so be aware of that as you schedule your fill. Consult with your esthetician or lash specialist on what works best for you and your lashes.
