This month, we are happy to celebrate yet another one of our alumni who has had great success in the esthetics field. We’d like to highlight Jami Atkinson at His and Hers Waxing. Congrats, Jami!
About Jami
Jami graduated from Skinworks in May of 2016. She attained a Master Esthetician’s license and went on to work in waxing. We asked Jami to tell us why she decided to pursue a career in esthetics.
“I was actually looking to go into nursing. It just wasn’t the right fit. A friend asked me, ‘Have you heard of esthetics?’, and she showed me everything about it. What really caught my eye was being able to do makeup.”
While she loves her job now, Jami told us she is hoping to become a freelance makeup artist this year. We believe that shows just how diverse the esthetics industry is. Waxing one minute and a makeup artist the next!
Outside of work, Jami enjoys hanging out with her family and her furbaby, Bentley. She also enjoys all types of music, but she revealed that her real obsession is makeup.
“I have a lipstick collection! I have almost 120!”
Why Skinworks
“When I started looking into esthetics, I was looking at different schools, and Skinworks just sounded awesome. They told me about the master’s program, and it opened up more possibilities. I saw the medical side to it, which is what I was interested in then.”
We hope Jami enjoyed her time here just as much as we enjoyed having her. We strongly believe that an education is the best place to start you career in esthetics. We asked Jami her thoughts on the topic of education.
“An education does so much for you. Many people think you can learn makeup off of YouTube, but you don’t learn important things there. You don’t learn about safety and infections, and that is so important. An education makes you stronger. When you tell your clients you went to school, they are more comfortable.”
Jami shared a memory from her time at Skinworks that she felt exemplified a client being comfortable with her because of her education.
“The thing I liked most about Skinworks was that the spa is right there. When people came into the spa, it felt like a real spa, not a school. I had someone tell me I acted like a graduate because of how I was taught and because of the look and feel of the school.”
At Work
Jami’s title at His and Hers Waxing is “Wax Ninja”. Jami, the Wax Ninja, told us her favorite part of waxing.
“The main thing I like about waxing is: I can create a personal relationship with my clients. They tell me everything. Someone can come in with brows they don’t like, and I can help them. They can walk out feeling more confident and beautiful. I may have made a tiny change but it makes such a difference. That’s why my favorite wax is brows!”
Lastly, we asked Jami to share any advice she has for those who are looking to get an esthetics education or in becoming a waxing specialist.
“For waxing I would say, skin is skin, and hair is hair. Apply your knowledge and get it done. Be a person. Everyone wants a comfortable experience.”
“For esthetics in general I would tell people to do masters! I am thankful to everyone who pushed me and helped me complete masters. You learn so much more, and it made me more confident.”
We want to wish Jami the best of luck in her endeavors, whether they be in waxing, makeup, or any other area of esthetics. If you are looking to pursue esthetics like Jami, check out our Master’s Program, and contact us for more info on getting started!
